Welcome

Program Overview/Philosophy

The Eisenhower Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program offers five years of intensive study and practice. Entry is either at the internship level or at the PGY2 level after completion of one year's training in an ACGME-accredited orthopaedic surgery internship. The curriculum provides for two residents at each level, with extensive exposure and practical experience in all phases of reconstructive surgery, spine surgery, sports medicine, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, orthopaedic oncology, complex trauma, prosthetics, orthotics, and complete inpatient and outpatient care. Residents rotate for six months at the nationally renowned Scottish Rite Children's Hospital of Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia, where all aspects of pediatric orthopaedics are covered. Trauma training is concentrated through rotations at the Level 1 Trauma Center at PRISMA Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC.

In addition to these outside rotations, residents attend short courses in AO Basic Surgical Skills, Orthotics and Prosthetics, AOSpine Resident Training Course, and the Enneking Musculoskeletal Orthopaedic Oncology course. Ample opportunity is given for research during each year of training. Basic science research is supported through our Department of Clinical Investigation with capabilities for studying biomechanics, biomaterials, genetics, pharmacokinetics, and biostatistics. Opportunity for conducting clinical research protocols is available at any time during the course of training

Visiting Student Info

Our expectations for you during your rotation is to give you ample opportunity to work alongside our full complement of orthopaedic subspecialty-trained attending surgeons as well as our residents.  We value your time here with us and as such, you will not be scutted out to perform aimless tasks.  We hope you will take the opportunity to assist the residents and interns in the care of our patients.  You are not expected to take call while you are with us but the opportunity is absolutely available and will provide you the opportunity to present in front of the residents and staff during morning report.

Given the size of our program, you will be granted a lot of freedom in your day to day activities regarding operating room and clinic exposure. The academic chief resident, in coordination with the junior residents, will prepare a schedule for you to maximize your exposure to our staff. It is your responsibility to ask for the surgical and clinic schedules in advance and to plan accordingly. Furthermore, it is your responsibility to make time to discuss surgical cases with the operating resident prior to the day of surgery.

At the close of your rotation, we expect you to deliver a 5-8 minute presentation on an orthopaedic topic of your choice during morning report. You will also have the opportunity to interview with our staff and chief residents during your rotation.

We would like to thank you again for taking the time to visit our program and we look forward to getting to know you more. We are happy to continue to answer any questions and provide advice as needed.
