Typical Resident Schedule

Intern Year

6-months of orthopaedic surgery, 5 TAMC, 1 month Ortho Trauma at The Queen’s Medical Center (Honolulu, HI). 1-month rotations in MSK Radiology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Anesthesia, and ICU.

PGY2

TAMC Hand Surgery, TAMC Sports Surgery, TAMC Oncology/Arthroplasty, and TAMC Spine

PGY3

Queen’s Medical Center Ortho Trauma Rotation (Honolulu, HI), TAMC Foot and Ankle, Shiner’s Honolulu, TAMC Sports Surgery

Shock Trauma Rotation (University of Maryland), Texas Scottish Rite Pediatric Rotation (Houston, TX), Kaiser Trauma/Joints (Honolulu, HI), TAMC Spine

Resident Events 

Annual Resident Retreat- Each year the Program Director covers primary call for a 48-hour period ensuring residents have zero clinical responsibilities for teambuilding and reflection near the end of the academic year.

Resident Wellness Day- Once a quarter in-lieu of academics, the residents participate in an off-site activity without call or clinical responsibilities. These events have included hiking, beach days, and familiarization flights with aviation units at Schoffield Barracks. 

Journal Club- Once monthly journal club is sponsored by the TAMC Orthopaedic Surgery Alumni Fund and provides a catered venue for discussion of timely and important academic articles. Discussion is led by residents with input from staff.

Hawaii Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting- Each spring this intimate 2-day meeting is hosted at premier venue in Waikiki and provides residents with exposure to world renowned guest lecturers and opportunities to present research presentations.

University of Hawaii Orthopaedic Oncology Conference- Annual board style review of bone and soft tissue tumors spanning two half-days. Co-hosted by TAMC and University of Hawaii with experts from the Madrid Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Course. 

Cadaver Labs- Residents have access to preserved cadaver for anatomic teaching throughout the year. Several industry-sponsored cadaver labs include a trauma/fixation lab, arthroplasty lab, and nerve repair/micro lab.
